What Size Rug Do I Need?
The right rug size grounds your space, defines flow, and elevates the room’s overall balance. Below is a guide to choosing the size that fits both your layout and your life.
Living Room
5x8
- For small seating areas
- Place under the coffee table, sofa legs off the rug
6x9
- Ideal for medium-sized living rooms
- Sofa front legs on the rug, coffee table fully centered
- Creates a defined zone without crowding
8x10
- Most versatile choice for standard living rooms
- Sofa front legs and accent chairs fully or partially on rug
9x12
- Best for large or open-plan spaces
- Entire seating arrangement sits on the rug
📐 Tip: Maintain a 12–18" floor border between the rug and the wall.

Dining Room
5x8 or 6x9
- Fits tables for 4–6 people
- Ensures chairs stay on the rug when pulled out
8x10 or 9x12
- For longer tables or more generous layouts
- Allows at least 24" beyond all sides of the table
📐 Tip: Choose a rug at least 2 feet longer and wider than your table.

Bedroom
5x8
- For queen beds: rug under bottom two-thirds of bed
6x9
- For queen beds: rug extends under bed with room to show on all sides
- For king beds: works as a centered base with bedside overlap
8x10
- For king beds: provides full coverage, including nightstands
📐 Tip: Leave 18–24" of rug visible around the bed for balance.
Entryway & Hall
3x5 or 4x6
- Adds warmth and structure
- Center with floor space on either side
📐 Tip: A too-small rug in a long space breaks the flow.
